John Wissler
Born in St. Louis, Missouri
Born and raised in St. Louis, John Wissler developed an early interest in realism. Still, his artistic focus shifted to abstract and modern and modern expressionism when he attended the Kansas City Art Institute in the late 1980s. Inspired by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon, and Joan Miro, much of Wissler’s early work consisted of an intersection of landscapes and abstraction, creating a sense of familiarity and ambiguity.
In his most recent most recent work, Wissler has returned to his passion for representational realism, bringing with it as sense of nostalgia for his past work. His paintings are characterized by a timeless, ethereal quality, rendered in monochromatic oils on canvas. The lack of color is intended to provoke the imagination and stir deeper emotions, as he seeks to give notice to the creatures we share this world with and to evoke primal memories of the past.
