Patrick Johnson
Rusty Pail Among Other Things
Patrick Johnson (b. 1970), is a process-based artist with his roots deeply set in Abstract Expressionism. He divides his time between creating art and creating architecture. His work can best be described as “situational storytelling”. Johnson’s work, at its core, is an exploration of raw emotion, past experiences, and all the while… interlaced with a collection of current and past dreams and memories. Much of his work attempts to explore his early childhood years and trying to document those illusive, but significant, events along the way that seem so formative now. As he has progressed his storytelling in recent work, he also delves into his more current history but approaches it with the voice and perspective of his “childhood self”.
“My dreams and memories occupy a uniquely disproportionate area within my brain.” While not having a great short-term memory, his recall of adolescent detailed dreams and memories is astounding. He refers to this as his “dream vault”. His work attempts to describe events from various perspectives simultaneously. He approaches the painting process with respect for the “dream state” and creates a lucid archival history of his life’s memories and events along the way. Always evolving and adapting, his work moves back and forth from large vivid color compositions, markings, drawing, and etching… to large-scale sketching.
“I believe that art creates art. While I do paint for myself, I do hope that somehow it inspires something in others to create for themselves and along the way in this journey of life…we are all connected.”
